Do you read a book for the implicit sermon, with occasional explicit sermons thrown in? This is the book for you.Not dystopian. The plot does occur long years after the collapse of society in a compilation of listed excesses, global warming, sexism, capitalism, list-ism, other list-ism. And the characters have an arc, listlessly presented.I was at a lake house alone with nothing to read but this book, and still put it down. I loved Fifteem Lives, and wanted to like this book. The author should have written a screed, a lecture about all the social ills of the time, and then put the screed aside and written the book. Instead, you can tell that she wants to lecture your ass, and that the story is being told to lecture your ass, and that means that you are Supposed To Be Learning Something, but se artfully covers up the fact that she jsut does not know What to make of the ills of modern society. Just that they are ills.We can all read a newspaper.The book obviously contains some resonances with a better book, A Canticle For Lebowitz. The main character is hapless. A hapless hero caught in a storm of lecture notes.Pass. I think I read everything written by Claire North since The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August and have to say that nothing came close to that masterpiece. Until this wonderful novel that is!I expect that even those like me who are not big fans of post apocalyptic fiction would find it immensely enjoyable.Highly recommend it with audible narration !!
